Since 2002's jaunty Waiting for My Rocket to Come, Jason Mraz has developed into a more mature, well-rounded pop artist. We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things is his most multi-dimensional work yet, covering everything from groove-based material to ballads. While tracks such as "Make It Mine" and "Butterfly" refer back to the catchy style of previous albums, there are many other styles and textures on display here. His duet with Colbie Caillat, "Lucky," for example, explores his folkish, acoustic side, as does the compelling "Details in the Fabric," both of which are excellent songs. Mraz gets a little more experimental on "Coyotes," which toys with a clubby electronica and strangely seems to work, and on "The Dynamo of Volition" for which he employs a hectic, rapping-style of vocal over a typically contagious rhythm. His ballads, such as "Love For A Child", "If It Kills Me" and "Beautiful Mess" (these last two saved for the end) show a more sensitive side and even when his lyrics are occasionally clumsy, Mraz manages to make his point in an emotive way. Easy-going and sunny, but with laudable elements of depth and innovation, this is Mraz at his best so far.--Danny McKenna

Ever the primary conceit of mainstays Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, 1976's The Royal Scam marks the first time the Steely Dan duo actually owned up to the fact. Musically, it's their edgiest, most guitar-driven record (thanks to Becker and a murderer's row of session greats that includes Larry Carlton, Elliot Randall, Dean Parks, and Denny Dias). Lyrically, the songs cut an ever-sardonic, presciently discomforting slice of modern life that was a couple decades ahead of the game (who else was extolling the virtues of condom-couture, à la "The Fez," mid-Me Decade?). Though it didn't garner the radio attention of Aja, its more jazz-suffused, multiplatinum follow-up, Scam boasts a diverse, occasionally muscular musical rhetoric and some of the Dan's most telling portraits (the deranged, yet all-too-familiar killer of "Don't Take Me Alive," "Kid Charlemagne"'s drug-culture celebrity, the tropical convenience of a "Haitian Divorce"). But that prosperity came bundled with a fateful triple-whammy for rock's dyspeptic duo: unrealistic commercial expectations, a critical backlash spawned by punk's nascent mewling, and the long-simmering meltdown of their artistic partnership. But the cool, perfect sheen of 1980's Gaucho tipped its hand to none of it. Ironically, those fashion victims who sniffed up their sleeves at Don and Walt's decadence-tinged Me Decade manifesto couldn't have had a clue that just maybe Gaucho's typically oblique protagonists had uncomfortably blurred from the third-person to the first this time 'round. At least that's what Becker and Fagen hint at in their smart-assed notes to this digitally remastered, definitive edition (all original artwork and printed lyrics restored) of the final album before their 20-year hiatus. Pristine and sonically polished (three years and seven studios worth), time has served Gaucho well. Even its sense of laconic detachment now seems but a logical bridge to the two-decade removed Dan of Two Against Nature. In a studio, far, far away in a place of mountains, snow and northern lights there exists a workout like no other... and it is known throughout the land as Buns of Steel!

This incredible lower body program was created by Anchorage Alaska Hip Hop Aerobics Club owner / instructor Greg Smithey, as an alternative to traditional aerobics programs.

It's a typical night at the Hip Hop. The parking lot is full. A sign hangs on the door to the studio..."Sorry class is full."

Inside, around a hundred men and women, young and old, eagerly await the enterance of Dr. Buns, Professor of Bunology, Prince of Pain and Master of Masochism.

In a few moments the wait is over and the fun begins...the Bunmaster appears...a cassette tape in one hand and a long leather whip in the other (it's only a prop!).

After a few minutes the class is aroused from their sitting positions as a few instructions and appropriate warnings are given to first time visitors.

It takes only a few moments before the entire class is up and roaring with enthusiasm, hands clapping, and bodies pulsing to the excellent upbeat music from the four large speakers overhead...

The warmup has begun and soon everyone will be back on the studio floor feasting on a menu of lower leg, hip, thigh, and bun exercises delightfully prepared and enthusiastically served.

The studio lights are dimmed, the stage is lit and for the next 50 minutes the Bunmaster goes to work...encouraging and motivating everyone through each of over 50 seperate exercises designed to sculpt and strengthen the lower legs, hips, thighs and buns into submission.

Throughout the studio the Bunmaster's voice can be heard... "beautiful legs...beautiful legs...work those beautiful legs....and don't forget to squeeze those cheeseburgers out of those thighs and that carrot cake...and those french fries!"
