Looney Tunes: Golden Collection, Vol. 1
List Price: |
DescriptionWhat's up, Doc? Well, how about a four-disc boxed set packed with 56 of the funniest cartoons in Warner Bros. history? Get ready to laugh yourself silly with salutes to Bugs Bunny ("Baseball Bugs," "Long-Haired Hare," "Wabbit Twouble," "The Rabbit of Seville," and more); Daffy Duck and Porky Pig ("Duck Amuck," "Dough for the Do-Do," "Scaredy Cat," "Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2th Century," and more); and other toon faves ("Elmer's Candid Camera," "Fast and Furry-ous," "For Scent-imental Reasons," "Speedy Gonzales," "The Foghorn Leghorn," "Devil May Hare," and more). 6 3/4 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital mono, French Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish; audio commentary; documentaries; featurette; more. NOTE: This set includes all 28 shorts from "Premiere Collection, Vol. 1." For years, animation buffs have waited impatiently for the Warner Bros. cartoons to appear on DVD. The Warner shorts never commanded the budgets and prestige of the Disney and MGM films, and won fewer Oscars than they deserved. But decades after the best ones were created, they remain the quintessential Hollywood cartoons: brash, fast-paced, aggressively funny and uniquely American. Virtually everyone in the U.S. under the age of 60 grew up on these films, in theaters and on TV. The 56 cartoons in the set (out of a studio output of over 1,000) were transferred from good prints--which means the viewer can see dust, scratches, and occasional mistakes by the cel painters. The films are all presented uncut, in defiance of the killjoys who have insisted on censoring alleged "violence" in the versions shown on television. Warner Bros. is obviously testing consumer response with this set. Although the erratic selection includes many classics, purists will argue (correctly) that it offers neither a fair representation of the directors' oeuvres, nor anything approaching a coherent history of the characters or studio style. (Nearly half the films were directed by Chuck Jones; only three are by Bob Clampett, and there's nothing by Tex Avery or Frank Tashlin.) But it seems petty to carp about omissions and biases when the discs offer excellent, uncensored prints of some of the funniest films ever made in the U.S.--or anywhere else. (Rated G, suitable for all ages: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon Features

Yellow Submarine
List Price: |
DescriptionAustralia released, NTSC/Region 1 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 5.1 ), English ( Mono ), English ( Subtitles ), French ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN, SPECIAL FEATURES: Behind the scenes, Booklet, Cast/Crew Interview(s), Commentary, Featurette, Interactive Menu, Remastered, Scene Access, Storyboards, Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: The Beatles agree to accompany Captain Fred in his Yellow Submarine and go to Pepperland to free it from the music hating Blue Meanies . ...The Beatles - Yellow Submarine ( Yellow Submarine ) This restored, animated valentine to the Beatles offers viewers the rare chance to see a work that's been substantially improved by its technical facelift, not just supersized with extra footage. Recognizing that its song-studded soundtrack alone makes Yellow Submarine a video annuity, United Artists has lavished a frame-by-frame refurbishment of the original feature, while replacing its original monaural audio tracks with a meticulously reconstructed stereo mix that actually refines legendary original album versions. What emerges is a vivid time capsule of the late '60s and a minor milestone in animation. The music represents the quartet's zenith--Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The story line, cobbled together by producer Al Brodax and a committee of writers, is a broad, feather-light allegory set in idyllic Pepperland, where the gentle citizens are threatened by the nasty, music-hating Blue Meanies and their surreal arsenal of henchmen, with the Beatles enlisted to thwart the bad guys. Visually, designer Heinz Edelmann mixes the biomorphic squiggles, day-glo palette, and Beardsley-esque portraits of Peter Max with rotoscoped still photographs and film; Edelmann's animated collages also nod to Andy Warhol and Magritte in properly psychedelic fashion, which works wonderfully with such terrific songs. High orthodox Beatlemaniacs can still grouse that the animated Fab Four are (literally) flat archetypes, but that's missing the sheer bloom of the music or the giddy, campy fun of the visuals. Making sense of the story is second to submerging blissfully in the sights and sounds of this video treat. --Sam Sutherland |

Elmo's World - Babies, Dogs & More
List Price: |
Description50 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo. Sesame Street's cheerful redhead chuckles his way through this delightful 50-minute compilation of three favorite "Elmo's World" episodes. First come the babies: real babies, Muppet babies, and animal babies. With help from Mister Noodle, a cast of Muppets, and video vignettes featuring humans, Elmo discovers what babies can do and how to play with them. Next come the dogs. Once again, Elmo's on the move--this time to share important tips about respecting the family pet. The final episode examines life on the farm. Viewers will observe youngsters accomplishing daily farm chores as well as Muppet farmers and barn animals punning around. As Elmo bops around his house (simply drawn and "furnished" with color crayon sketches), he chats with Dorothy the pet goldfish, poses questions to Mister Noodle, and tunes in to his friendly television for helpful cartoons presented by "The Baby Channel," "The Dog Channel," and of course, "The Farm Channel." Educational and entertaining for the younger crowd, each segment explores its topic using a variety of creative, quick-paced methods, enhanced by an upbeat soundtrack. (Ages 3 to 6) --Liane Thomas |

Castle in the Sky (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)
List Price: |
DescriptionA young boy embarks on the adventure of a lifetime when he meets a girl who possesses a pendant that could lead them to a legendary floating palace where a vast treasure is stored. But first they must outsmart a crew of sinister pirates and a nefarious government agent, all of whom want the kingdom for themselves. James Van Der Beek, Anna Paquin, and Cloris Leachman supply voices in Hayao Miyazaki's action-packed animated tale. 125 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: Japanese DTS HD 5.1 Master Audio, English DTS HD 5.1 Master Audio, French Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English, French; storyboards; featurettes; more. In Japanese with English subtitles/Dubbed in English. Also includes a DVD version of the film. Two-disc set. Inspired by "Gulliver's Travels," the fantasy-adventure Castle in the Sky (1986) was Hayao Miyazaki's third feature, and helped to establish his reputation as a visionary in both Japan and America. The orphan Sheeta inherited a mysterious crystal that links her to the legendary sky-kingdom of Laputa. With the help of resourceful Pazu and a rollicking band of sky pirates, she makes her way to the ruins of the once-great civilization. Sheeta and Pazu must outwit the evil Muska, who plans to use Laputa's science to make himself ruler of the world. Castle echoes elements in Myazaki's earlier NausicaƤ, and anticipates imagery in his later films, from My Neighbor Totoro to Spirited Away. Disney's new English dub, which features Anna Paquin (Sheeta), James Van Der Beek (Pazu), and Cloris Leachman (pirate matriarch Dola), is lively and close in tone to the original Japanese, if a bit talkier. The exciting flying sequences, appealing characters, and fantastic vision of a steam-powered future Jules Verne might have imagined make Castle in the Sky a must-have for fans of Japanese and Western animation. (Unrated: suitable for ages 10 and older: violence) --Charles Solomon |

Whisper of the Heart (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)
List Price: |
DescriptionAnime auteur Hayao Miyazaki scripted and produced this adaptation of a popular girls' comic series. When teenage schoolgirl Shizuku discovers the books she borrowed from the library were all previously checked out by the same person, her quest to find the mystery man leads to surprises and an unexpected romance. Voices by Cary Elwes, David Gallagher, Brittany Snow. 111 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: Japanese DTS HD 5.1 Master Audio, English DTS HD 5.1 Master Audio; Subtitles: English, French; featurettes; storyboards; theatrical trailers; TV spots. In Japanese with English subtitles/Dubbed in English. Also includes a DVD version of the film. Two-disc set. Based on a manga by Aoi Hiiragi, the gentle coming-of-age story Whisper of the Heart (1995) was scripted and storyboarded by Hayao Miyazaki, and directed by the late Yoshifumi Kondo. Shizuku Tsukishima is an absent-minded, insecure junior high school student who reads book after book of fairy tales, helps her friends, and does most of her chores, but remains dissatisfied. When she encounters a wonderfully supercilious cat on the train, she follows him and meets Seiji Amasawa, a student in her class who hopes to become a violin maker. Seiji's commitment to his dream helps Shizuku find her voice, literally and figuratively: she realizes she wants to become a writer. A statue of a cat in the antique store of Seiji's kindly grandfather inspires her first story, "Whisper of the Heart." Shizuku and Seiji exhibit believable strengths and flaws: their warm humanity contrasts markedly with the shabby superficiality of the characters in many American animated films. The lively performances of Brittany Snow and David Gallagher transcend the geographic limits of the story to make Shizuku and Seiji the kids the viewer wishes lived next door. Miyazaki's script suggests that a sense of magic can exist, even in everyday Tokyo. Whisper of the Heart was the only film Yoshifumi Kondo directed before his untimely death at age 47, but its understated charm stands as a monument to his talent. Puss in Boots (Two-disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)
List Price: |
DescriptionEveryone knows Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) from the "Shrek" films, but years before meeting the green ogre, the swashbuckling feline had his own animated adventure. Learn the origin of the furry lover, fighter, and outlaw as he teams up with Kitty Softpaws and Humpty Dumpty to steal magic beans from the dastardly Jack and Jill in a castle guarded by giants so Puss can clear his name. Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, and Billy Bob Thornton supply voices. 90 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English Dolby TrueHD 7.1, Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital stereo Surround, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), Spanish, French; deleted scenes; featurettes; theatrical trailers; bonus digital copy; more. Also includes a DVD version of the film. Two-disc set. In this fractured fairy tale, Jack and Jill have the magic beans and Humpty Dumpty, with the aid of Kitty Softpaws, convinces his old friend Puss in Boots to help him steal the beans so they can climb the beanstalk to get to the golden eggs. Never mind that Humpty Dumpty and Puss in Boots had a falling out years ago, or that Jack and Jill are completely preoccupied by their squabbling over whether or not to have a child--and regardless that Puss in Boots is a wanted cat who's sworn off his thieving ways, and Kitty Softpaws is a cat burglar who works alone. Comedy abounds in this film, not only in the twists and turns of some classic fairy tales gone awry, but with scenes that range from a litter-box dance fight between crowds of cats to Jack expressing his paternal instincts by strapping on a baby carrier filled with a piglet in a diaper, and, of course, Puss in Boots' crafty use of his famous sad eyes to get just what he wants. The animation is top-notch (especially in the mass cat scenes), the music is compelling, and the voice talents of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zack Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton, and Amy Sedaris are solid. While considered by some to be a prequel of sorts to the four Shrek films, Puss in Boots is definitely a stand-alone spinoff. What the films do share is a common comedic interpretation of some well-known fairy-tale characters and knack for spinning a funny story that appeals to both kids and adults. While a heightened sense of peril and some extended fight scenes may prove a bit intense for the youngest and most sensitive audience members, Puss in Boots is generally appropriate for ages 7 and older. --Tami Horiuchi Features
