Animusic - A Computer Animation Video Album (Special Edition)

DescriptionWatching Animusic is like being mesmerized by the world's most elaborate Rube Goldberg devices: You're so astonished by their ingenuity that you can't look away. This "computer animation video album" is the brainchild of Wayne Lytle, a progressive-rock keyboardist and 1988 graduate of Cornell University's Program of Computer Graphics. Modifying techniques originally applied to the visualization of scientific data, Lytle partnered with graphic artist and 3D modeler Dave Crognale to create elaborate virtual stage sets and imaginary musical instruments that are driven via MIDI interface to virtually "play" the music that Lytle has composed for them. "The music drives the instruments," explains Lytle in his engaging DVD commentary, "and not the other way around." Using proprietary software called MIDImotion™, Lytle and Crognale have invented self-playing musical instruments that exist in a magical realm of musical and mathematical precision, perfectly synchronized to the kind of fully-synthesized prog-rock that Lytle obviously enjoys (and if you're a fan of Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman, you will, too). It's the kind of audiovisual bombast that appeals to some more than others (and there's something oddly impersonal about removing humans from the performance of music), but Animusic is so intricately clever that anyone can be captivated by the meticulous novelty of these beautifully engineered musical marvels. Take, for example, the most popular track, "Pipe Dream," in which thousands of animated balls take on a life of their own, popping out of an intricate system of pipes and barrels and bouncing, with percussive precision, onto all varieties of strings, drums, xylophones, timbales, cowbells... it's just hypnotically amazing. The same holds true for all of these videos, and while the colorful 3D rendering of Animusic (first released in 2001) is no longer state-of-the-art, the underlying mechanics remain timelessly appealing. For this special edition DVD released in 2004, Lytle opens his toy-box to reveal the creative process of Animusic from conceptual drawings to final 3D rendering. There's also a "solo-cam" function allowing viewers to switch angular focus from one instrument to another, along with animated set-construction demonstrations to show how everything fits together in the realm of Animusic. The 5.1-channel surround mix makes Animusic a perfect demonstration disc for high-end video systems (this is nothing if not a geek's delight), and Lytle's first animation (from 1996) is included along with a sneak-peek at Animusic 2, the follow-up DVD released in 2005. --Jeff Shannon |

That's hip in a retro kind of way; writer-producers Adam Reed and Matt Thompson, whose previous collaborations include Frisky Dingo and Sealab 2021 (both also animated, and both seen on the Adult Swim channel), have given these 10 first-season episodes a secret-agent vibe straight out of the Sean Connery James Bond '60s. At center stage is Sterling Archer (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin), top agent for an outfit known as ISIS, which just happens to be headed by his domineering, sex-starved mother, Malory (Jessica Walter). Others on the team include agent Lana Kane (Aisha Tyler), Sterling's once and no doubt future lover, nerdy company comptroller Cyril Figgis (Chris Parnell), Lana's current boyfriend, and some colorful supporting characters. But this is mostly about Sterling, who, in addition to his fancy spy chops, is an irresponsible liar, ne'er-do-well, and wastrel (he spends an entire episode breaking into the agency's mainframe so he can blame someone else for his outrageous expenses). His missions, in which he's often joined by Lana (the better to hurl flirtatious epithets at one another), are fairly stock: Cuban missile submarines off the Florida coast; an arms dealer peddling stolen weapons; a bomb threat on a luxury airship. And the animation, while effective, is limited and unlikely to remind anyone of a Pixar movie. It's the writing that really makes this show shine, as Reed and Thompson revel in an unending stream of hilarious puns, insults, and bons mots: a shirt retrieved from an Indian dry cleaner "smells like Indira Gandhi's thong," karate is "the Dane Cook of martial arts," a particularly bloody shootout is "a Charles Whitman sampler." It's definitely not for kids, but Archer is a hoot. Extras include a version of the pilot episode with an "alternate" lead character, and an interesting making-of featurette. --Sam Graham Features

Escaping from their clutches, he and a typically mismatched group of friends set out to find the Guardians, the only owls capable of defeating the Pure Ones. The first feature from the Animal Logic studio since the Oscar-winning Happy Feet, Legend of the Guardians quickly degenerates into an unsatisfying muddle of elements borrowed from Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and The Lion King. The storytelling borders on the inept: The Pure Ones are using bats to create some sort of blue electricity that paralyzes owls, but no one ever explains what it is, how it works, or why the bats created it. The first battle between the Pure Ones and Guardians is presented as an ancient myth, yet many of the participants are still alive. Soren and his friends look up at the stars to navigate their way to the Guardians' island, but when the camera pans down to them flying, the sky is the blue of a summer afternoon. The vocal cast includes Helen Mirren, Miriam Margolyes, and Geoffrey Rush, who somehow manage to read hokey lines like "listen to your gizzard" without snickering. Despite Snyder's elaborate use of swooping 3-D pan shots to energize the visuals, the film feels achingly slow at 91 minutes. Too scary for small children and too clichéd for their older siblings and parents, Legend of the Guardians ranks among 2010's most disappointing animated films.
