One of the breakout stars of 1998, DMX wasted little time in following up his No. 1 album It's Dark and Hell Is Hot with Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood. If the quick turnaround seems surprising, maybe it's because DMX's second LP doesn't fall far from the original tree. Key to his formula, DMX has mastered the art of thug-life anthems, following in the dubious footsteps of 2Pac and Noreaga. While his gruff voice and simple delivery help make his songs infectious, they're rarely creative, especially with anemic beats, redundant subject matter, and his trademark barks. Basically, Flesh of My Flesh is a perfect buy for those who couldn't wait a whole year for another DMX LP, but it won't convert many new listeners. --Oliver Wang

This album is ostensibly the soundtrack to the car-chase flick of the same name, featuring Gotti's own Murder Inc. soldier, Ja Rule. It's chock-full of samples previously utilized to better effect by Tha Alkaholiks, Dr. Dre, and Swizz Beats (who, on the misguided Limp Bizkit/DMX/Redman/Method Man combo, "Rolling," actually reworks one of his own beats). According to the liner notes, the album was "conceived and created by IRV GOTTI" (note the block caps), but it's unclear why Mr. Gotti wishes to take full responsibility for this half-baked mixture of posturing hip-hop and ineffective R&B. The most obvious clunker is the aforementioned "Rolling," which comes off as a wan retread of the Beasties' "What You Want?" Vita's right behind them with a pointless word-for-word cover of Madonna's "Justify My Love." The album's not a complete washout, though. R. Kelly steps in to save the day with the lovely "Take My Time Tonight," and Nate Dogg adds his inimitable brand of L.B. funk to Shade Sheist's "Cali Diseaz." And perhaps most notably, The Fast and the Furious offers a chance to catch Petey Pablo before he really grasps the brass ring. --Rebecca Levine

In his first American film lead, Hong Kong sensation Jet Li plays an ex-cop who breaks out of the Chinese prison where he's been unjustly jailed and travels to Oakland, looking to avenge his brother's death. Li becomes romantically involved with Aaliyah, but the would-be lovers are caught on opposite sides of a deadly mob war waged by their fathers. Delroy Lindo, Isaiah Washington and Russell Wong also star in this action-packed, urban-flavored "Romeo and Juliet" revamping. 110 min. Cinematographer Andrzej Bartkowiak, the cameraman behind Speed, Lethal Weapon 4, and The Devil's Advocate, makes his directorial debut with a lively but by-the-numbers film that mixes Hong Kong action pyrotechnics with gritty urban gang drama. Jet Li stars as a jailed cop named Han who hightails it to Oakland, California, to seek revenge for the gang-related murder of his brother. What he finds, though, is a fierce war between his father's syndicate and that of Isaak O'Day (Delroy Lindo) for control of the city's precious waterfront land, as both groups are trying to make a deal with a corrupt football-team owner to build a new stadium. The political shenanigans are basically just a backdrop for the kick-ass action, and to give Li a number of enemies to lock limbs with. It also provides him with a love interest, Trish (hip-hop star Aaliyah), who's O'Day's daughter and like Han, the only straight arrow in a family of crooked mobsters. Li and Aaliyah have a teasing, gentle chemistry, and when they're onscreen together, the movie lights up and glides along smoothly. Li even finds a way to work Aaliyah into one of his action set pieces, using her arms and legs to fight a female adversary because "I can't hit a girl!" However, when these two aren't onscreen (and that's a fair amount of the time) the movie plods along, despite a stately turn by Lindo and Isaiah Washington and Russell Wong as two family allies who may not be as loyal as they seem. Li's action, though, is still phenomenal as ever, from his prison breakout (as he takes out a platoon of guards--strung upside down by one leg) to a knockdown-dragout fight with the agile and dangerously sexy Wong. And despite the Romeo and Juliet overtones, this is one mighty chaste romance, albeit one with a happy ending for the star-crossed lovers. --Mark Englehart
