Rather than a full-fledged coming-out party for this tough-minded rapper, Ruff Ryders' First Lady seems more like a sequel to the Ryde or Die, Vol. 1 compilation. Ryders boss DMX, Missy Elliott, and other guests take mic time equal to that of the album's nominal star, making performances such as "Scenario 2000" posse cuts more than reflections of Eve's state of mind. She does get her own thing going on "Love Is Blind"--the angry expression of sisterhood in the face of male abuse that Chante Moore's "Chante's Got a Man" should've been--and "My Bitches," which praises students and job holders as much as the gangstas who get props on other tracks. --Rickey Wright

This album is ostensibly the soundtrack to the car-chase flick of the same name, featuring Gotti's own Murder Inc. soldier, Ja Rule. It's chock-full of samples previously utilized to better effect by Tha Alkaholiks, Dr. Dre, and Swizz Beats (who, on the misguided Limp Bizkit/DMX/Redman/Method Man combo, "Rolling," actually reworks one of his own beats). According to the liner notes, the album was "conceived and created by IRV GOTTI" (note the block caps), but it's unclear why Mr. Gotti wishes to take full responsibility for this half-baked mixture of posturing hip-hop and ineffective R&B. The most obvious clunker is the aforementioned "Rolling," which comes off as a wan retread of the Beasties' "What You Want?" Vita's right behind them with a pointless word-for-word cover of Madonna's "Justify My Love." The album's not a complete washout, though. R. Kelly steps in to save the day with the lovely "Take My Time Tonight," and Nate Dogg adds his inimitable brand of L.B. funk to Shade Sheist's "Cali Diseaz." And perhaps most notably, The Fast and the Furious offers a chance to catch Petey Pablo before he really grasps the brass ring. --Rebecca Levine

Despite the overwrought production and excessive use of trite catch phrases that typifies the output of today's corporate rap elite, Dark Man's innate raw power can't be masked. Had he fallen off, The Great Depression would be considered an amazing comeback, but since X's reputation is intact and it's hip-hop as a genre that's floundering, the album serves as an antidote to the flood of insipid hip-hop/R&B combinations and "Oochie Wally"-isms that clog the airwaves. Standout tracks include the riot-inducing "Who We Be" and the dead-on "Shorty Was Da Bomb." Even the lesser tunes are dope. On first listen, Depression's most accessible song, "We Right Here," comes off as mindless radio fodder, but its blunt chorus quickly grows on you. The album's centerpiece, "I Miss You," is a genuinely personal composition built around a universal theme. Here, DMX's lyrics and delivery invite the same favorable comparisons to Tupac Shakur that he received earlier in his career. --Rebecca Levine
