MORISSETTE ALANIS JAGGED LITTLE PILL

Her intensely personal lyrics grabbed the headlines, but the bravest departure here is the way Morissette's unique vocals stand naked in the mix--a technique that drives home the painful honesty of tracks like "Right Through You," "Forgiven," and "All I Really Want." Sheryl Crow or an earthier Tori Amos are fair analogies, but Morissette is a genuine original with a rare ability to make listeners care, think, and question. --Jeff Bateman

Description

Few rock concert documents can match this 1978 live album for sheer musicianship, or for its full-blooded representation of one of the best live bands ever. Little Feat's turbulent '70s pilgrimage had been studded with commercial detours when its second incarnation as a swampy, blues-rock sextet clicked musically, and these English and American dates, beautifully recorded by George Massenburg, capture the band in all its rowdy, precise glory. The late Lowell George's influence had been damped down in the studio, deferring to his bandmates' writing and singing, but Columbus is dominated by his gruff, lyrical vocal presence and the mercurial tang of his indelible slide guitar. With the Tower of Power Horns aboard to inject razor-sharp horn work, this romp through the Feat songbook of southern-fried rock represents a satisfying summation of the band's best works, every bit as engaging as their studio models. This is simmering, smart music measured by an honor roll of great songs with no lapses. The only caveat--and a minor one--is the deletion of two tracks to squeeze the original two LPs onto a single CD. --Sam Sutherland

This 1978 live album remains a serious contender for one of the best live rock albums ever etched, standing toe to toe with live classics from the Band, Allman Brothers, and the Who. Recorded during concerts in London and Washington, D.C., Waiting for Columbus vividly captures the L.A. sextet at a crossroads between its swampy mid-'70s fusion of blues, country, and New Orleans R&B, and the more eclectic jazz accents introduced later in the decade. If the late Lowell George's influence had diminished in the studio, his presence dominates here in rowdy, righteous vocals, the mercurial tang of his indelible slide guitar, and a set-list laced with his songs. While still riveting in its initial, abridged CD release, this remastered two-disc edition expands and resequences the songs into a full concert set, with encore. Two deleted tracks are further augmented by 10 additional performances to make this a definitive edition of a classic album that really will "boogie your speakers away." --Sam Sutherland

Description

From Bill Monroe to Alison Krauss, this is a classic introduction to bluegrass music, with such standards as "Orange Blossom Special," "Roll in My Sweet Baby's Arms" and "Foggy Mountain Breakdown."No Track Information AvailableMedia Type: CDArtist: APPALACHIAN STOMP-BLUEGRASSTitle: APPALACHIAN STOMP-BLUEGRASS CLStreet Release Date: 02/28/1995

Appalachian Stomp is an ideal starter disc for those just beginning to explore bluegrass. Mostly this is because its 18 selections are so immediately accessible. The "classics" here, in other words, are usually those infrequent bluegrass cuts to have gained radio recognition beyond a core bluegrass audience. That explains why along with timeless standards such as Flatt & Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" and the Osborne Brothers' "Rocky Top" we also get "Dueling Banjos" from the film Deliverance, a cut that is to classic bluegrass what Walter Murphy is to Beethoven. There are less immediately obvious choices too, though. If your previous exposure to bluegrass doesn't go beyond the Holy Trinity of Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, and the Stanley Brothers--for example, if you've never heard J.D. Crowe & the New South's stellar example of progressive bluegrass, "Old Home Place," or experienced Jimmy Martin lay down the law on his rousing "You Don't Know My Mind"--then you're in for a high-lonesome surprise. --David Cantwell

Description

Filter a Twilight Zone vibe through Stephen King's brain and you get Nightmares & Dreamscapes, an uneven but generally entertaining collection of eight tales that originally (2006) aired on TNT. There is no unifying theme here; although King's short stories provided the source material, there are six directors and seven screenwriters represented, so the episodes offer a variety of looks and styles, with content ranging from monsters to mind games, from pure fantasy to pulp fiction, from genuinely scary to merely unsettling. Still, a certain ineffably "King-ian" sensibility, combining elements of horror, terror, suspense, and whimsy, is always in evidence, as are the popular writer's own preoccupations (with authors who may or not be stand-ins for King himself, rock 'n' roll, and guys who won't ask for directions while their wives complain, inevitably leading them into very nasty situations). Among the highlights: In "Battleground," a merciless hit man (William Hurt) offs a toy manufacturer and then finds himself attacked in his own apartment by a battalion of indefatigable toy soldiers; directed by Brian Henson, the episode has no dialogue and some terrific effects work. In "Umney's Last Case," William H. Macy is amusing as a crime writer who cruelly toys with his literary alter ego, an arch, fedora-wearing gumshoe (also Macy); it's an acting tour de force and a story that takes some deft and intriguing turns. "The Road Virus Heads North," with Tom Berenger as a horror novelist who finds himself pursued by… well, by a painting (guess you had to be there), is perhaps the scariest of the lot; it's also the best shot, with a cool jazz soundtrack and a nifty ending. Less successful is "Crouch End," set in a sinister part of London where "thin spots" in the earth lead to creepy new dimensions (nice premise, but it's overwritten and fails to sustain its Twilight Zone weirdness), while "You Know They Got a Hell of Band" is only fitfully effective in its depiction of Rock & Roll Heaven, Oregon, a town where Elvis is mayor and the rest of the living dead range from Hendrix and Joplin to Duane Allman and Buddy Holly. The three-disc set's decent if unexceptional special features include "inside looks" at the making of several episodes, actor interviews, and more. --Sam Graham

Eight of horror master Stephen King's spooky short stories--"Umney's Last Case," "The End of the Whole Mess," "Crouch End," "The Fifth Quarter," "Autopsy Room Four," "You Know They Got a Hell of a Band," "Battleground," and "The Road Virus Heads North"--are brought to life in this compelling mini-anthology series. The top-notch cast includes William H. Macy, Ron Livingston, Henry Thomas, Claire Forlani, Samantha Mathis, Kim Delaney, Steven Weber, Tom Berenger, and William Hurt. 6 1/3 hrs. total on three discs. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: Spanish; deleted scenes; featurettes; interviews; art gallery.
