Back in 1969, Muddy Waters and Otis Spann teamed with young guns Paul Butterfield and Michael Bloomfield to create Fathers & Sons. The idea was to match the sagacity of the "old timers" with the flash and commercial muscle of the upstarts. Nearly three decades later, Jimmy Rogers (like Spann, an alumnus of Waters's commanding '50s group) holed up in the studio with Butterfield-Bloomfield contemporaries Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, and Stephen Stills; the result is Blues Blues Blues, the late singer-guitarist's swan song. Here's something to ponder: Waters was 54 when Fathers & Sons was recorded, the same age as Jagger when he cut his two tracks for this set. So maybe this collection should've been called Great-Grandfathers & Grandfathers. That said, Jagger's two contributions to Blues Blues Blues highlight this effort; he sounds invigorated dueting with the steady-rollin' Rogers on "Trouble No More" and gooses up Sonny Boy Williamson's "Don't Start Me to Talkin'" with studied nonchalance. With other rock-era titans (Taj Mahal, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page) and blues stalwarts (Carey Bell, Johnnie Johnson, Hound Dog Taylor & the Houserockers drummer Ted Harvey) along to lend support, Blues Blues Blues is a star-studded sendoff to one of the blues' noble patriarchs. --Steven Stolder

Shades of the band's superb sophomore effort, Electro-Shock Blues, recorded after the suicide of Everett's sister and the death of his father, show up here on such wounded tracks as "Checkout Blues," "If You See Natalie," and "I'm Going to Stop Pretending I Didn't Break Your Heart." Permeating those are instrumental snippets, some sad and ponderous ("Theme from Blinking Lights"), others bordering on bright ("Theme for a Pretty Girl that Makes You Believe God Exists"), and a handful of ironic exercises in straight-up pop (the winking "Going Fetal" and the cynical but upbeat "Hey Man [Now You're Really Living]"). Spread over two discs, the mood of Blinking Lights burns in fast and builds in its ferocity, so that when lighter moments like the funny "Whatever Happened to Soy Bomb" surface, they seem like ominous breaks in the storm. The CD is primarily Country/Rock with a hard, satirical edge. There are a few twists and turns added to give it the "Elvis Stewart" touch. The Bright Side Of Your Moon contains plenty of subtle humor, a bit of double entendre, quality musicianship, and a liberal amount of genuine emotion. Some unusual recording techniques were utilized in the making of the CD. Geno recorded all of his vocal tracks lying on his back. We're not sure why he did this, but we're sure he'll continue to do the live shows standing up. On the song "I Was Rock 'N' Roll When Country Wasn't Cool", all guitar tracks were played through a battery operated amp with a 3" speaker. He used a $5 toy microphone for the vocals in this song. Somehow, it all comes together. You just have to hear it for yourself. This is a concept album, written entirely by Geno Stewart. It tells the story of a musician's life from the inside, when the crowd has gone, the equipment's loaded, and he has the road and himself to deal with.
